Len Lye Centre
Todd Energy is pleased to support the Len Lye Centre project – establishing a world centre for the care, display, research and development of Len Lye’s works is a major initiative and the new gallery is set to become a valuable and proudly Taranaki asset.
New Zealand-born artist Len Lye (1901-1980) was a pioneer in his field. Primarily known for his kinetic sculptures and experimental films, his two New Zealand kinetic sculptures can be found at the New Plymouth waterfront (Wind Wand) and the Wellington waterfront (Water Whirler).
Len Lye’s unexpected take on the world around him, his resourcefulness and the technical brilliance he brings to his work are attributes we admire and strive to apply to our business too.
The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery has produced a short video about Len Lye, his work, and the new Len Lye Centre facility. The three-minute video features TV presenter Jim Hickey, musician Jon Toogood, and filmmaker Paora Joseph talking about how Len Lye’s work inspires their careers and what a ‘potent and powerful acquisition’ the Len Lye Centre will be for New Plymouth and New Zealand. This is the first of a video series that will take you behind-the-scenes of the new facility development leading up to the reopening in 2015.
The Centre’s foundation plaque was unveiled by the the Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae Governor General of New Zealand in September 2013. The Centre is to be built next to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth and is expected to open in early 2015. Todd Energy is the sole founding partner of the Len Lye Centre and will become the naming partner for both the Todd Energy Foyer and Todd Energy Learning Centre in the Len Lye Centre.
